Why the name “Five Petal?”

Why does our logo feature a stylized five-petaled flower? Coffee flowers are beautiful, elegant and fragrant. They mark the beginning of a long and complex voyage that this tropical beverage takes as it moves from its home high in the misty mountains to the flavor receptors of your palate.

Five Petal works hard to make sure this journey ends like it started—beautiful, elegant and fragrant. We want to preserve and enhance, when possible, the unique story and beauty of each of the incredible coffees we source.

How we do it

Sourcing with intention

Select the most unique, clean, terroir-driven and delicious coffees we can find from incredible producers. These are what we refer to as hyper-specialty coffees.

Roast with precision

Employ cutting-edge roasting technology that enables us to apply a highly precise and data-driven approach to roasting these spectacular coffees. Our small batch size allows us to be highly precise and iterate more as we hone in on the roast curve we believe best accentuates a particular coffee’s most desirable flavor characteristics.

Roasting Style

Our roasting style aims to maximize flavor clarity, sweetness, and intensity while minimizing “roasty” qualities that can obscure the delicious flavor nuances within coffee. Even within coffee enthusiast circles, there is disagreement about what constitutes light, medium, and dark roasts. Furthermore, there is debate over what qualifies as an “ultra-light” versus a more standard light roast. We consider our roast style to be on the very light end of the spectrum, based on color readings. Gastronomy coffees are often roasted darker than the majority of our coffees to achieve better balance with food and milk.

Evaluate Obsessively

We are equipment “nerds” like many of you. The complex nuances of the amazing coffees Five Petal sources and roasts are best evaluated using similarly exceptional equipment and technique. This does not mean you need a $4,000 grinder to enjoy our coffees! It does mean that we explore and evaluate our coffees through the eyes of passionate coffee enthusiasts.
